Siargao Beyond The Waves: Exploring The Island’s Hidden Gems

Planning a trip to this popular surfing destination on your next visit to the Philippines? Get insider tips from one of KUBO’s founders’ own sojourn.

As the year drew to a close, I once again found myself drawn to the serene shores of Siargao—a place that has woven itself into the fabric of my travels. I consider this enchanting island my escape—where I allow for reflection and what I affectionately call “muni-muni” or introspection.

After stepping away from corporate life at 50—an unconventional choice fueled by the realization that life is fleeting—I’ve embraced a journey of purpose and joy. Siargao, with its natural beauty and vibrant culture, is the perfect backdrop for this chapter of my life.

Laid-back Itinerary

If you likewise wish to explore the island leisurely on your next vacation back in the motherland, I share my ideal Siargao itinerary below to help you enjoy the island that has so much more to offer than just an epic surfing experience.

Day 1: Arrival, Stay, and Siargao’s Famous Pizza

Kaimana Resort Day 1

A quick two-hour flight from Manila lands me in the laid-back atmosphere of Siargao. I check into Kaimana Resort, a hidden gem nestled in the quieter corners of General Luna. The accommodation is cozy, with a plush bed, a spacious balcony overlooking the pool, and a bathroom that meets all my needs. It’s the ideal sanctuary after a day of travel.

Dinner at Kermit

Dinner is at Kermit, my go-to spot for pizza and pasta. The rustic ambiance instantly transports me back to Boracay of 20 years ago, where simplicity meets flavor. Their brick oven-baked pizza is a must-try, especially when paired with a delightful bottle of Italian wine. It’s the perfect blend of comfort and nostalgia.

Day 2: A Morning Run and Local Fare

The day begins with a refreshing 5K run through a gentle drizzle that invigorates my spirit. There’s something magical about running on the island with the sound of waves crashing in the background. Post-run, we indulge in a hearty breakfast at Siago, a quaint resort that offers breathtaking beach views and delicious meals.

Opting for a laid-back itinerary, we savor the slow pace of island life. As the sun sets, we find ourselves at Bravo, a local favorite known for its vibrant atmosphere and delectable dishes. Later, we consider a night out in town. Siargao’s nightly bar rotation ensures that one venue hosts the ultimate party each evening, allowing everyone to experience the island’s lively nightlife.

Day 3: Exploring the Island’s Hidden Wonders

We began the third day with high hopes of biking around the island—an adventure I had eagerly anticipated. However, fate had other plans, as a mix-up with our bike reservations led us to opt for a scooter instead. Sometimes, the best adventures come from unexpected changes!

Coconut Mountain View

Our first stop was the breathtaking Coconut Mountain View. The panoramic vistas from this vantage point are nothing short of spectacular, offering a mesmerizing glimpse of Siargao’s lush landscapes. It’s a perfect spot for Instagram-worthy shots that capture the island’s beauty.

Maasin River

Next, we headed to Maasin River for some kayaking. We paddled through the tranquil waters, surrounded by verdant mangroves. The highlight of our day was discovering the Secret Lagoon—a gem that truly lives up to its name. The serene atmosphere and crystal-clear waters made it an idyllic escape, reminding me once again that Siargao is full of surprises, even on my third visit. The only drawback is you can’t stay longer than 15 minutes in the lagoon since they only allow one group at a time.

Day 4: A Day of Relaxation and Culinary Delights

Riding Waves and Catching Sunsets at Cloud 9

On our fourth day, we embraced the island’s laid-back vibe, starting with a visit to Cloud 9, famed for its surf breaks and stunning sunsets. Watching surfers ride the waves while sipping fresh coconut juice is a quintessential Siargao experience. The energy here is infectious, and it’s a great spot to unwind and soak in the coastal ambiance.

Later, we made our way to the Magpupungko Rock Pools, where the tide was just right, revealing incredible natural pools to explore. These stunning tidal pools are best visited during low tide, as it reveals a playground of natural beauty. The combination of sun, sea, and rock formations creates a picturesque setting for a leisurely swim and some quality time with nature. You’ll marvel at the stunning coastal views.

As the sun set, we capped off our trip with an unforgettable degustation dinner at Roots Restaurant. With chefs from Italy and Mexico at the helm, it offers a feast for the senses. Each dish was a masterpiece, but the ceviche truly stole the show—fresh, vibrant, and bursting with flavor. If you find yourself in Siargao, this is a must in your culinary journey on the island.
