This coming October 25 to November 1, 2023, Siargao will be hosting the 27th Siargao International Surfing Cup. It’s an international event that is poised to set the island ablaze with anticipation and adrenaline. The iconic Cloud 9, in the vibrant Municipality of General Luna, Siargao, Surigao Del Norte, will once again become the epicenter of world-class surfing. Drawing athletes and aficionados from every corner of the globe, this event stands as a testimony to Siargao’s legendary waves and its vibrant surf community that remains unshaken. In the wake of the devastation brought about by Typhoon Odette in 2021, the people of Siargao have shown unparalleled resilience, and the Surfing Cup stands as proof of their unwavering spirit in the face of past challenges.
The Siargao International Surfing Cup, an annual event mounted by the Municipality of General Luna, was first held in 1994. The local government partnered with the World Surf League, the global body that oversees various international contests and names surfing world champions across divisions. Since its launch 29 years ago, the Siargao Cup has evolved into a symbolic testament to the Philippines being global surfing haven, all while celebrating Siargao’s tight-knit surf community. This year’s cup promises to be a multicentric celebration of surfing culture, values, and community, as pro international surfers gear up to challenge the powerful waves of Siargao in a bid for the WSL Men’s and Women’s QS3000 International Surfing Cup.
