There’s nothing like the holiday season in the Philippines, and part of a truly Pinoy Christmas is the opening of the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) on December 25. Today marks the first day of the 49th MMFF, so if you’re in PH right now, you’re in for a treat, as critics and entertainment writers have hailed most of the 10 participating films this year a must-watch. We at KUBO know that one of the things visiting Pinoys love to do when they’re in the country is watch local movies, especially those starring their favorite stars, and MMFF has offerings from all of your faves: Piolo Pascual, Sharon Cuneta, Vilma Santos, Christopher de Leon, Marian Rivera, Dingdong Dantes, Alden Richards, and so much more!
The Metro Manila Film Festival started in the ‘70s as an annual celebration of ingenious Pinoy movies. Organized by the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA), MMFF 2023 runs in cinemas nationwide from Dec. 25, 2023 to Jan. 7, 2024. There will be an awards night called Gabi ng Parangal on Dec. 27, results of which might further guide your choices on what to watch over the next couple of weeks.
If you’re not in PH to watch these movies within the festival schedule, don’t fret: The 10 finalists of the 49th MMFF will also be shown in the Manila International Film Festival from Jan. 30 to Feb. 2, 2024, in Los Angeles, California. The most successful films will also likely get a wider theatrical release in other US cities and countries where there are a lot of Pinoys.
Considering all MMFF entries this year are good movies, the big question is which one should you watch first—and which should you view later? We know that, given the limited time you have in PH during your holiday visit, you may not have the time to watch all 10 participating films, so learn more about each of them—from the cast to the plot and why you’d want to watch it—in this KUBO guide, and decide what to prioritize:
Reel and Real Heroes
GomBurZa
Cast: Dante Rivero, Cedrick Juan, Enchong Dee, and Piolo Pascual
GomBurZa is a historical film about Fr. Mariano Gomez (Dante Rivero), Fr. Jose Burgos (Cedrick Juan), and Fr. Jacinto Zamora (Enchong Dee), collectively known as GOMBURZA, whose death and martyrdom played a crucial role in sparking the desire of Filipinos to fight for Philippine independence from Spanish colonizers. Made with the aim to reawaken the burning passion of Filipinos for national justice, equality, truth, and independence, this masterpiece talks about the secularization movement led by Padre Pedro Pelaez (Piolo Pascual), which aimed to give Filipino priests the right to lead their parishes over Spanish friars, until the public execution of GOMBURZA.
Why you should watch it now: Historical masterpieces like GomBurZa are a must-watch, as they help the younger generation—especially those who did not grow up in PH—be more informed about what transpired in our country’s past. Since historical films or biopics are rarely produced, KUBO highly recommends watching GomBurZa now with family and friends, especially kids age 13 and up who are visiting PH for the first time.
Penduko
Cast: Matteo Guidicelli, Albert Martinez, John Arcilla, Kylie Versoza, Candy Pangilinan, Marissa Sanchez, JC Tiuseco, and Mark Anthony Fernandez
Penduko, the legendary superhero based on the original Pinoy comics character created by National Artist Francisco V. Conching, returns to the big screen in MMFF after a two-decade hiatus, with an action-packed fantasy storyline. Compared to previous Penduko films, which were more on the comedy-adventure side, this version of Penduko will have a lot of action scenes, where Matteo Guidicelli even performs arnis.
Penduko follows the journey of Pedro (Matteo), a young man with mythical and supernatural powers that he inherited from his ancestors. But instead of using his gift to help the sick and the poor like his father, Pedro leaves his hometown to pursue his dreams. Unfortunately, his life in the city turns miserable as he works odd jobs just to make ends meet, until his fate leads him to an underground organization of albularyos (folk healers). It is in this secret organization where Pedro’s real adventure begins.
Why you should watch it now: We recommend watching Penduko now if you’ll be watching with young kids, as it’s only one of two MMFF entries with a General Audience (G) rating, meaning it’s suitable for all audiences. You will also enjoy Penduko if you’re into the action genre, or if you happen to be a fan of AshMatt (the combined names of real-life couple Sarah Asher Geronimo and Matteo).
Mother and Son Tales
Family of Two
Cast: Sharon Cuneta, Alden Richards, Jackie Lou Blanco, Tonton Gutierrez, Miles Ocampo, Soliman Cruz, and Pepe Herrera
From the producers of the award-winning film Family Matters comes another touching drama that revolves around a mother and son: Family of Two tells the story of a single mom, Maricar, and her devoted son, Mateo, whose love and devotion to each other will be tested when the latter’s object of affection decides to migrate. Mateo wants to follow the woman he loves abroad but he doesn’t want to leave his mother alone. Thus, he sets out a plan to find a good man for Maricar. But will she be open to the idea of dating? Will Mateo find the happiness he wants with the girl he loves? Will their separation make them realize what they want and need in life?
Why you should watch it now: If you are a Sharonian, a member of Aldenatics, or simply love heartwarming Pinoy family movies, you will enjoy Family of Two, the only other MMFF 2023 movie with a G rating. Watch with your loved ones, especially your mom and kids. It will definitely strike a chord among Pinoys visiting from abroad.
Firefly
Cast: Alessandra de Rossi, Euwenn Mikaell, Dingdong Dantes, Miguel Tanfelix, Ysabel Ortega, Cherrie Pie Picache, Epy Quizon, Yayo Aguila, Max Collins, and Kokoy de Santos
Firefly is a coming-of-age drama that follows the grand adventure of a young boy who wants to fulfill his promise to his mother: to look for the mythical isle where one can make a wish upon seeing the light of a thousand fireflies. The Isle of Fireflies is part of the bedtime story shared by Elay, a single mom who wants her son Tonton to be bold, overcome his anxieties, and make the most out of life. Elay claims that the island is real and draws a map toward the mythical place. Believing his mother’s words literally, Tonton embarks on an unforgettable journey where he meets strangers who will either become his friends or foes.
Why you should watch it now: If you love drama and fantasy films that tug at your heartstrings, then you should watch Firefly now with family and friends. It has a PG (Parental Guidance) rating, which means kids 13 years and below must be accompanied by their parents or an adult when watching this film.

Azon, who is single and a senior citizen working as a chambermaid, has already given up on the possibility of finding the partner destined for her. One night, she meets and smacks a man named Joey, a divorcee, after an argument in a club. What started as a misunderstanding blossomed into a beautiful relationship. But how long will this romance last when faced with challenges?
When I Met You In Tokyo is the reunion project of Vilma and Christopher. This is their 25th film since their team-up began over four decades ago. Vilma and Boyet’s last movie together was Mano Po III: My Love, which won in the 2004 MMFF.

Rewind
Cast: Dingdong Dantes, Marian Rivera, Jordan Lim, Pepe Herrera, Sue Ramirez, Joross Gamboa, Lito Pimentel, Ina Feleo, Ariel Ureta, Pamu Pomerada, Mary Joy Apostol, Via Antonio, Chamyto Aguedan, and Coney Reyes
One of the much-awaited films in this year’s MMFF is the fantasy-drama Rewind, which depicts how an individual, who prioritizes work over family and eventually neglects people around them, can wake up one day losing their loved ones. But if they were given a chance to turn back time, how would they make up for it?
This is the dilemma of Rewind’s protagonist, John (Dingdong Dantes), who regrets losing his wife, Mary (Marian Rivera), in a car accident. Grief-stricken and desperate to have his wife back in his life, as well as fix his crumbling relationship with his son Austin (Jordan Lim), John receives help from Lods (Pepe Herrera) and is sent back to a day before the accident happened. With this second chance, John can start anew and make up for lost time and affection. However, this opportunity comes with a price.
Why you should watch it now: Rewind is the highly anticipated return of power couple DongYan to the big screen since their 2010 movie You To Me Are Everything. It is also the GMA Network stars’ first-ever collaboration with ABS-CBN’s Star Cinema. Prepare your hearts (and box of tissues) and wear waterproof eye makeup when you watch Rewind.
Spine-tingling, Twisted Family Stories
Mallari
Cast: Piolo Pascual, Janella Salvador, Elisse Joson, JC Santos, Gloria Diaz, and Mylene Dizon
Dubbed as the scariest horror movie of the year, Mallari is inspired by the life of Fr. Juan Severino Mallari, a Filipino parish priest in Magalang, Pampanga in the 1800s. He killed at least 57 parishioners before he was arrested, making him the first documented serial killer in the country. What provoked the supposed man of God to do these evil acts? The film also unravels the connection of the three Mallari men—Fr. Severino, John Rey, and Jonathan (all played by Piolo Pascual)—from past to present.
The movie boasts several firsts, among them: Mallari is the first local film to be distributed by American entertainment studio giant Warner Bros.; it is Piolo’s first horror movie; and it is also Piolo’s first time to portray three characters in a film.
Why you should watch it now: If you enjoy scary films, you’re a Piolo fan, or maybe just want to watch something dark and different during this season of cheer, we recommend watching Mallari with your partner or your barkada.
Kampon
