What was once only known as Makati City’s red-light district, Poblacion has now grown into a flourishing creative haven of various themed restaurants, intimate speakeasy bars, and a colorful nightlife. Now also fondly called Pob by its regulars, Poblacion welcomes curious tourists and locals alike with an all-around cultural experience of food, drinks, and music.

While more and more places pop-up along Poblacion’s streets, here are six of our favorite Pob spots that we at Kubo think are worth exploring whenever you’re in Makati or just passing through Metro Manila:

1. Ugly Duck Tapas Bar & Rooftop Lounge

In the early months of 2023, the Ugly Duck Tapas rooftop bar opened its doors to people who enjoy all kinds of fun. From trivia nights to 2000s themed ragers, this bar’s expansive roster of events makes it a go-to place for those looking for a good time, especially if you’re just visiting and would like tons of memories of a fun night out with friends to tide you over until your return. The resto-club’s food offerings also do not disappoint, especially their flavorful steak paella and fresh oysters baked to perfection—something you absolutely must enjoy when in Philippine shores.

2. Onlypans Taqueria

More often than not, a night well spent in Poblacion leads to a communal search for post-barhopping grub. Sitting along Don Pedro St. is Onlypans Taqueria, a well-lit, diner-inspired restaurant with a notable overflow of people until the wee hours of the morning. Famous for their juicy, cheesy Queso Birria Tacos and quesadillas, Onlypans is that place in Makati you go to when you’re looking for comfort food made with authentic Mexican ingredients that pack a powerful punch to the taste buds.

3. Run Rabbit Run

Inspired by an Alice In Wonderland fantasy, Run Rabbit Run is a quaint cocktail bar that can easily transport you to another world. From a wide array of powerful, award-winning cocktails, to its sophisticated, vintage interiors, there is a dark charm to the place that draws people to check it out—locals, foreigners, and balikbayans alike. Those who come here can enjoy sit-down, “good conversation” moments as the music is rarely too loud and the seats are rather comfortable—perfect for reunions with Manila-based friends when you’re in town.

4. Agimat Foraging Bar and Kitchen

A brainchild of Liquido Maestro Kalel Demetrio and Chef Niño Laus, Agimat stands to be the first foraging resto-bar in the Philippines. Want to enjoy Pinoy flavors while you’re in town? You’ll love that early Filipino agriculture and lifestyle inspires both the cocktails and food, from the use of rare local ingredients to the traditional presentation of each offering. The founders take much of their inspiration from the lush farms and mystical forests of the Philippines. Interestingly, because they use seasonal ingredients, Agimat alters their menu every three months to maintain the freshness and quality of their offerings. You’re bound to encounter something new the next time you return.

5. Pura Vida Manila

A bar that fuses Costa Rican and Reggae culture, Pura Vida Manila is famous for two things: grub and groove. Its founder, Renato Robles, is a full-blooded Costa Rican who has ensured that dishes offered are authentic and true to his heritage, often what you would see at a Costa Rican home. This is definitely the place to go if you happen to be traveling to PH with some Costa Rican guests. Bright colors of yellow, green, and red fill the space, while reggae music blasts through the speakers, welcoming anyone who comes out to just dance and have a good time.

6. Spirits Library

For whiskey lovers, cocktail enthusiasts, or those seeking a relaxing, laid-back evening, especially with friends you haven’t seen in a while, the Spirits Library is definitely the place to be. With over a thousand rare bottles displayed across its floor-to-ceiling shelves, there is a particular drama and elegance to the space that feels just like a magical potions lab. People often come by to enjoy award-winning concoctions and the diverse live music performances, which can range from jazz, blues, and even John Mayer nights (depending on the day). This night spot and its craft drinks can rival that of well-known bars abroad, so this is a must when looking for a great night out while in Metro Manila.
